Step by step from Windows to Apple

Kay Lakeman is Team Lead Software Engineering at Leads.io’s headquarters in Hoorn. Before working with Root3, Leads.io (then operating under a different name) used a Windows environment with Citrix, but there were a lot of complaints about that, from within the organization. “We were still small and about to open our first office abroad, in Toronto,” Kay says. “Our managed service provider at the time told us that we would have to buy expensive servers if we also wanted that IT setup with Windows and Citrix in Toronto. The director himself was already ‘secretly’ using a Macbook at the time, because he probably thought it was a nice device, and decided to give the people in Canada Macbooks as well.” 

To manage those MacBook, Kay initially went with Apple’s own management software, but that wasn’t sufficient. So he started looking for a better solution for Leads.io and came across Jamf in 2018 and eventually Root3 as a partner. “I had a conversation with Root3 and we liked it. We then immediately started using Jamf Pro and the Health Check. Our consultant was a nice guy, it was really fun during the days when Root3 was in our office. From that moment on we made the switch from Windows to Apple step by step throughout the organization together with Root3. And now, for a few years now, everyone at our company has been working only on Mac.”

Saving time and understanding

Root3’s portfolio evolved and today Leads.io utilizes what is called Root3’s “Premium Services,” including the SOPHOS virus scanner, endpoint protection, Zero Trust Network Access and the App Catalog solution where all apps in use are always up-to-date. When Kay looks at the advantages of the situation over the Windows era, one of the things the solution saves is time. “Back then, the organization was small and 2 people were managing. Now, 1 person within my team is responsible for daily workplace management.” In this regard, Kay thinks the cooperation with Root3 has been excellent. “Overall, the feeling is positive. With the Premium Services, someone with expertise sits in our office every 6 weeks, which helps tremendously. We then have collected issues and questions to walk through on that day, and we work on projects from time to time. For example, Root3 helped us set up Google Workspace with a partner.

In the future, Kay expects Leads.io’s organization to continue to grow. Then when new employees join, it’s also nice that onboarding goes smoothly. “We recently started using Zero Touch Deployment that allows employees to set up their own devices within a few intuitive steps.
