Today, Root3 released Support App 2.2, which brings even more proactive functionalities to help users solve simple issues on their own without IT assistance. In this blog, we will highlight the key improvements.

Modular Information Tiles

The administrator can now choose four out of the six available information tiles to display in the app:

  • IP Address (NEW)
  • Mac Password (NEW)
  • Computer Name
  • macOS Version
  • Last Restart

Storage The administrator can also set the recommended number of days before it’s advisable to restart the Mac. A notification will be shown in the menu bar icon and information tile when the specified number of days is reached. If the new ‘Mac Password’ tile is displayed, a notification can be shown in the menu bar icon and information tile when the password is about to expire within x number of days. Additionally, flexible rows (3rd and 4th rows) are introduced, allowing for two or three buttons to provide more options in terms of button quantity, app, URL, or command.

IP Address

A frequently requested feature has been added: an information tile to display the local IP address. The symbol also indicates whether the Mac is connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This information tile is optional and can be added through the configuration.

Mac Password

Organizations that have a password policy requiring users to change their password periodically will benefit from another new tile: Mac Password. This tile displays when the password for the local Mac account or Active Directory account will expire. Without the Support App, users are only informed about this when they log in or restart. It is even possible to set when the user receives a notification in the menu bar icon and information tile.

Flexible Rows

Based on feedback, we have made the configurable buttons in the 3rd and 4th rows more flexible. Organizations are no longer limited to a fixed set of buttons. Users can now choose between two or three buttons in these rows. Here are two examples:Option with three and two buttons

Option with three buttons for both

Computer Name and Model

The information tile displaying the computer name now also shows the Mac model and the year Apple released it. This information is revealed when the user hovers over the tile with the mouse.

Roadmap

We will continue to enhance the Support App, making it even more versatile, flexible, and proactive. Additionally, we are excited about WWDC21 and how SwiftUI will further develop in macOS 12.
