As an Apple IT service provider, we focus on a modern approach to keeping devices secure and compliant with regulations. We also consider the end-user experience to ensure they can work optimally with Apple products.

We have a dynamic approach to software updates and patch management for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. We utilize the Apple App Store and tools to keep apps outside the App Store up-to-date. Here’s a brief introduction on how we do this:

Apple Software Updates

Installing software updates for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS is a priority for many organizations. We strive to strike the right balance between installing updates and providing a suitable user experience. Users should have enough time to install these updates themselves to avoid disrupting their productivity, with the option to inform and enforce the update as a safety net.

For these software updates, we stay as close to the platform as possible and use Mobile Device Management (MDM) native tools to schedule updates, inform the user, and then force the update at a suitable time. We do this by building workflows and integrating with an MDM solution, offering a high level of automation to our customers. Currently, we are focusing on Declarative Device Management in macOS 14 and iOS/iPadOS 17 to further enhance the experience and security.

Microsoft Software Updates

We understand that many organizations work with Microsoft products. Therefore, we also provide support for Microsoft software updates on macOS through the Microsoft AutoUpdate app. This ensures seamless integration and keeps your Mac up-to-date with the latest Microsoft standards.

Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) is an essential tool for Mac users using Microsoft software because it helps keep the software up-to-date while ensuring the security and performance of your system. It ensures that you always have access to the latest features and security improvements in Microsoft applications without the hassle of manual updates.

Adobe Software Updates

For creative professionals, Adobe software like Photoshop and Illustrator is essential. We also keep your Adobe software up-to-date on macOS, ensuring you always have access to the latest features and security enhancements.

Adobe Remote Update Manager (RUM) is a tool offered by Adobe for system administrators and IT professionals to remotely update Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Adobe Acrobat, and other Adobe software without the need for user manual actions.

App Patch Management

Numerous apps are installed on every Mac and need periodic updates. Often, these are apps pushed from an MDM solution. However, users frequently install additional apps. How are these updated, and who is responsible for them? We saw this as a significant challenge that vendors had not fully addressed.

Since 2020, Root3 has been using the App Catalog for this purpose, and it has been available to all organizations seeking an automated patch management solution for apps since early 2023.

Our goal is to automate updates for as many apps as possible, whether they are managed or unmanaged apps. An MDM-independent agent provides a strict update schedule and offers users a secure workplace with the latest app functionality. Currently, we do this for approximately 1200 apps. Feel free to take a look at what the App Catalog can offer your organization!

Applying software updates remains our focus, with the aim of creating the optimal balance between an excellent user experience and security. We expect this topic to continue evolving in the coming years, and we will continue to advise and support our customers.
