During the opening keynote at WWDC 2026, Apple Park was entirely focused on the next generation of software. Whereas in previous years the foundations were laid for Apple Intelligence, this year Apple took the platform to a new level of maturity. Under the central philosophy ‘Enhanced by intelligence, not replaced by it’, Apple demonstrated how artificial intelligence is subtly yet powerfully woven into users’ daily workflows while fully protecting your privacy.

In this article, we’ll bring you up to speed on the key announcements for iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate, and what the impact is for organisations, IT administrators and users.

Later this week, we’ll be taking a closer look at the specific announcements for business environments, but for now, here’s a first glimpse of the key updates for organisations:

First look: What Root3 considers important for the business market

  • App Management: IT teams gain in-depth and flexible control over whether to allow or block specific apps and binaries. This functionality is in high demand in highly regulated sectors. Within these industries, control at the software level is crucial for meeting compliance requirements.
  • Platform Single Sign-On improvements: In macOS 27, Apple is introducing web-based login and mandatory Touch ID verification, which is a major step towards full passwordless authentication at the system level. Thanks to these updates, IT teams can display modern MFA and QR code logins directly on the FileVault and login screen, whilst biometric security (Touch ID/Apple Watch) renders traditional passwords obsolete.
  • Transition to Declarative Device Management: Declarative Device Management (DDM) is no longer the future; the time to adopt it is now. More configurations are being migrated, and new features are exclusively available via DDM.
  • Dynamic macOS menu bar: The macOS menu bar automatically hides redundant icons behind a compact ‘overflow icon’ when space is limited, whilst essential system components remain visible at all times.
  • Ultrawide display support: macOS will soon support higher resolutions on ultrawide monitors (such as 5K at 120Hz) and remembers the exact screen layout when reconnecting.

As is tradition, the main keynote focused on features that will transform every user’s day-to-day experience. Below are the key announcements that will be coming to your Apple devices this autumn.

Apple Intelligence comes of age: The launch of Siri AI

The biggest innovation within the Apple ecosystem is the transformation of the built-in assistant, which will officially be known as Siri AI. The assistant has been rebuilt from the ground up and boasts a deep understanding of personal context and natural language.

The key features at a glance:

  • On-screen Awareness: Siri AI can ‘see’ what’s happening on the screen. This allows the assistant to instantly understand the context and perform actions across different applications, such as directly processing data from an open PDF into a business email.
  • Fully conversational: Conversations flow more smoothly, allowing users to switch effortlessly between voice and text. Thanks to secure iCloud synchronisation (end-to-end encrypted), ongoing AI interactions can be seamlessly continued on Mac, iPad or iPhone.
  • Powerful hybrid architecture: For basic tasks, the system relies on on-device language models. Heavier, complex tasks are securely offloaded to the cloud, fully shielded behind Apple’s secure Private Cloud Compute. For the new on-device and cloud models, Apple is collaborating with Google and utilising Gemini technology to fully integrate custom models into Apple’s platforms.
  • Privacy-first: All this technology has been developed from the ground up to ensure that privacy is always protected and your information can never be accessed by any party, including Apple.

Instant productivity with updated Writing Tools and Shortcuts

For day-to-day tasks, Apple introduces updates that save time straight away and automate processes.

System-wide Writing Tools

The writing tools have evolved into a proactive editor that is available within any text field (including third-party apps). Employees can rewrite texts to a specific business tone with a single click, perform in-depth grammar analyses and condense lengthy email exchanges into clear tables or action points. Within the Mail app, Smart Reply ensures that questions are automatically identified and answered in a draft email.

‘Vibe Coding’ in the Shortcuts app

The barrier to automating complex workflows has finally been removed. Thanks to Apple Intelligence, users can now create a shortcut using natural language. By simply describing the end goal (for example: “Export my outstanding reminders to an iMessage every Friday and put my phone into Focus mode”), the AI instantly builds the command visually in the editor. This offers IT departments the opportunity to boost efficiency without costly development time.

A new pillar: Trust and Safety

In addition to its strong focus on AI, Apple made a strikingly significant statement this year regarding Trust and Safety. Privacy and the protection of underage users were presented as an absolute, non-negotiable cornerstone of the Apple ecosystem. In light of stricter global legislation, Apple is introducing a range of comprehensive parental control features for parents and carers.

Here is a summary of the most important security updates:

  • Completely revamped Screen Time: The Screen Time app has been redesigned from the ground up for maximum ease of use. Parents can now use Screen Time Schedules to specify which apps and categories (such as games or social media) are available on a daily basis or specifically at weekends.
  • Blocking nudity and inappropriate content: The existing Communication Safety feature (which already automatically blurred inappropriate nudity) has been expanded. The system can now also automatically detect and block extremely violent, explicit or inappropriate content for young users.
  • Ask to Browse & Website Approval: Children with a child account can use a new interface to explicitly request permission to visit specific websites. Parents can directly approve or block individual URLs, and determine who their children are allowed to communicate with via Messages.
  • New APIs for developers: Apple is launching a dedicated ‘Child Safety’ website and making a complete set of new APIs available to developers (such as the Declared Age Range API), so that third-party apps can integrate seamlessly with Apple’s age-specific protection.

As with Apple Intelligence, the same strict privacy guarantee applies here: all content analysis of websites, messages and images takes place locally on the device and cannot be viewed by anyone else.

Safari, the Wallet app and Home: Smart background tasks

Standard applications are also set to receive a significant boost in intelligence to support the end user’s focus and digitalisation efforts.

Safari is getting proactive monitoring

Safari has been the benchmark for privacy-friendly browsing for years and is introducing AI-powered tab organisation this year, which automatically groups open tabs by project or category. Of much greater interest to the business market is the new background automation: Safari can now independently monitor specific web pages and sends a push notification as soon as a change occurs. This is ideal for tracking developments in real time. In addition, users can generate their own custom extensions using natural language.

Smart digitalisation in the Wallet app

The updated Wallet app is an extremely practical addition for the mobile professional. Employees can now simply scan physical cards, badges, IDs and documents using the camera. Apple Intelligence securely recognises and extracts the data from the card, then instantly creates an official, encrypted digital version of it within the Wallet app.

Smarter Home app

Within the Home app, Apple Intelligence is applied to the camera footage from HomeKit Secure Video. Instead of generic motion alerts, the system now recognises specific objects and situations (“There’s a removal van in the driveway”). As all video analysis takes place entirely on the home hub, privacy is guaranteed.

Visual Intelligence and Creative Power

For creative professionals, marketing departments and everyday camera use, the update represents a significant leap forward in terms of capabilities.

Directe Visuele Intelligentie (Siri-modus in Camera)

One of the most straightforward features is that Apple is adding a special ‘Siri mode’ to the standard Camera app. This allows users to point the camera at an object or text to instantly retrieve visual context. Think of scanning product or food labels to instantly track macro-nutrient values in the Health app, or recognising details on a poster or business card to instantly convert them into a calendar event or contact.

Image Playground and Photos

  • Enhanced Image Playground: The AI-powered image generation tool now offers photorealistic styles and vector images, deeply integrated into productivity apps such as Freeform and Notes via the Image Wand.
  • Spatial Reframing in Photos: The Photos app uses the updated AI model to simplify photo editing via natural language. The most impressive feature is spatial reframing, whereby the AI can transform the perspective and camera angle of a photo taken earlier by filling in the depth information using a parallax effect.

Important note: No Siri AI in the European Union on iOS and iPadOS

Despite the promising announcements and the international language roadmap (under which the AI features will be rolled out to other languages following the English launch), there is a major downside for the European market. Apple has confirmed that Siri AI will not be available in the European Union on iOS and iPadOS for the time being.

Apple is currently facing obstacles due to the strict regulations of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Deep system integration (such as on-screen awareness) conflicts with European privacy guidelines. For organisations in the EU, this means that iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 will be released this autumn without Siri AI, unless an agreement is reached between Apple and Brussels. However, Siri AI will be available in the EU for macOS 27 and visionOS 27.

Availability and roadmap

As is customary, Apple concluded the presentation with its release roadmap. CEO Tim Cook emphasised that it remains a great honour for him to develop technology that brings about lasting improvements to people’s lives and productivity worldwide.

  • Developer Betas: Available immediately for app optimisation and testing.
  • Public Betas: Available later this month for early consumer testing.
  • Official release: Available free of charge as a software update this autumn.
