Recently, Root3 was a guest in the Mac Admins Podcast (episode 406) to talk about some of the tools we have developed here at Root3 to improve the Apple device management experience. We wanted to share a brief summary of what they discussed regarding our Support App and App Catalog.

Support App: an all-in-one solution for users

We explained how the Support app evolved from a simple internal tool we used for years to give our customers easy access to support channels. Seeing a broader need and being inspired to explore app development, the tool was rebuilt and eventually released as a free open-source application for the wider Mac Admins community.

Its purpose

It acts as a central place in the menu bar where users can find support contact details, access resources or even run specific scripts provided by IT.

Open-source

We made it open-source to give something back to the community that provides so many useful tools. We were really overwhelmed by the positive reception and the nearly 1.5 million downloads it has received.

Roadmap

We are continuously improving it. Upcoming plans include simplifying configuration (especially for different MDMs), possibly via a graphical interface in the app, and adding better accessibility support (such as VoiceOver).

App Catalog

We discussed the origins of the App Catalog, which stemmed from our internal need to automate the often tedious process of updating applications for our customers.

The goal

To automate the installation and, crucially, updating of applications so that devices remain secure and users have the latest features without manual intervention from IT.

Updating unmanaged apps

A key benefit is the ability to detect and patch applications that users (especially administrators) may have installed themselves, even if IT has not implemented them itself, as long as the app is in our App Catalog (with more than 1,500 apps and that number is still growing).

MDM agnostic

App Catalog functions independently of a specific MDM vendor and provides a consistent management experience even if an organisation switches to another MDM solution.

Self Service

A self-service application complements background automation. This provides users with a familiar ‘App Store’ experience, allowing them to install approved software and manage updates at a convenient time, rather than being forced by a schedule.

Thanks to the Mac Admins Podcast team

It was great to share these tools with Mac Admins Podcast listeners. We are passionate about finding ways to fill gaps in device management and improve the experience for both administrators and end users. Many thanks to the Mac Admins Podcast team for participating in the show!
